Overview
Math Attack is a heavy-metal-themed focus app that locks users out of distracting apps like Instagram or TikTok until they solve a math problem correctly. Part brain trainer, part productivity tool, it blends fast mental arithmetic with Apple’s Screen Time APIs to create a powerful intervention against doomscrolling.
What I Did
Integrated Apple’s Screen Time API (FamilyControls) to let users select which apps they want Math Attack to shield.
Implemented the Device Activity framework to monitor unlock windows and enforce re-shielding if users try to bypass the system.
Built a custom Shield Screen that replaces social media apps with Math Attack’s challenge interface until the user answers correctly.
Designed and developed a mental math training engine with difficulty scaling, multiple-choice options, and penalty logic for wrong answers.
Created a unique heavy-metal aesthetic (textures, logo, onboarding flow, animations) to make productivity feel less clinical and more motivating.
Handled the entire release pipeline — App Store provisioning with entitlements, privacy policy/support pages, screenshots, and launch marketing.
Why It Matters
Math Attack demonstrates how I can ship a deeply technical product that integrates with sensitive iOS frameworks while still delivering a distinctive user experience. It shows my ability to:
Work with complex entitlements and Apple review constraints.
Translate abstract behavioral ideas (blocking apps, discouraging button-mashing) into practical UX flows.
Combine engineering rigor with branding and design flair, producing a tool that is both functional and memorable.
By blending productivity with play, Math Attack reimagines focus tools as something people actually want to use.
